atolboo, now that, I did know about. If I had to add anything in general about all package managers I have tried, including the terminal based aptitude, is the ability to use "page down" , "page up" or the up or down arrow keys to scan through the packages instead of using the scroll wheel on my mouse or clicking on the side bar arrows or slider bar on the screen using my mouse. I do remember aptitude had short cut keys for selecting and scrolling , but I don't think they included the arrow keys or page up/page down. Now you're going to tell me how I can set up these keys to do this, right? I'll have to look into it, seriously, as there probably is a way to do this. It's more comfortable for me to use the key board keys than the mouse. Regards, Lisa Marie

I did a search in PiSi for both koffice and kword for installed and new...let me look again. Thanks! P.S. Hi Trixon, and thank you! I was using the search bar incorrectly. I would click on Show New Packages or Show Installed Packages and entered my search, expecting it to show in the large field on the right. It found it after I clicked on Components>KDE Desktop. I feel so stupid! Thanks, as I learned something by this mistake. Regards, Lisa

I am upgrading my RAM from 1 GB to 4 GB (I am running a couple of 64-bit distros). WIll the increased RAM just be recognized or do I need to do anything about that.
I spoke too soon without checking System and my recent install of 4GB of RAM. System>Memory shows 2.6GB of 3.0GB This could be because neither XP or Pardus is 64-bit based distros. But, your 64-bit based Linux distros should see the full G's, at least that is what I understand. Regards, Lisa Marie

Hi, I tried this word processor in Fedora 9, (the ONLY thing I liked about Fedora 9 KDE4, by the way-very buggy!) I didn't know KDE had their own word processor. Kword came up quickly and worked well. I see there is OpenOffice in PiSi, but Kword would be a nice option for the KDE desktop. http://www.koffice.org/kword/Lisa Marie

Yes, that's the live cd. I had a quick search and one fellow said during install to use for initial log in screen: username: root password: pardus Years ago on Simple Mepis it was: root root and I remember another one was: demo demo If the above doesn't work, try pardus pardus Regards, Lisa Marie

ups, forgot, and if all else fails, there is turbo print. It is a third-party printer drivers that are made for several printer brands and models. It is not free, but one can try it out for one month. I would look over their forum to see if the particular printer in question works with their drivers on Linux. They don't always work.
Cheers, Lisa Marie

Hallo Gürkan,
I hope it works, too, as it seems to be a problem with certain Linux distros, kernel module, not sure.
I have a Canon Pixma ip3000 printer, and so far it works except for one web page I go to, the Los Angeles Times Crosswords, where I like to print the Sunday crossword. Using cups, the print is not clear, like some of the dots of ink are missing. Still, in Pardus it is better than the last kernel, distro I was using (Mint Elyssa) where the page would print the page pushed over to one side of the paper plus the messy fonts mentioned above.
Hopefully with upgrades, they will fix this for the Epson.

Thanks, atolboo! I used that how to restore grub wiki last week, so I am familiar with it/comfortable with it. sata drives are labeled sd, and my second drive is listed as sdb. Don't worry, I wouldn't blame if something goes amiss. That is why I said I'd like to give it a try. I'll have to learn how to do it sooner or later. I appreciate it! Lisa Marie

General / General topics / [solved] multiple boot windows XP with more than one Linux OS

Hi,
This is probably something I shouldn't be doing, as I am a newbie, but I'd like to give it a try. I'd like to know how to install another Linux distro alongside Pardus (Parud 2008.1 being my main distro) and XP.
I'm waiting on the other distro from my husband, so I won't be able to try this right away.
My set up is two hard drives, sata drives.
sda is the smaller of the two and has XP at the front with grub installed on the MBR, in the middle a NTFS storage partition, and at the end, Pardus system files and at the very end, a Linux swap space.
I'd like to install the other distro (kde mint) on the second unpartitioned / empty hard drive.
I've read some how to's, but they are for other distros, like Redhat. I'm curious if when the distro asks to where to put grub, should I just tell it not to install any grub, or put it on that particular distros root partition? I know not to have grub installed on MBR as grub is already installed there via Pardus.
And then some say one needs to edit the grub conf file to add some text to show the chain loaded distros so they all show up in grub, but they never go into details for newbies like me to understand the directions. Will it effect any kernel updates by doing this?
I'm still getting used to Pardus users and root set up. I'm used to doing sudo from the days of ubuntu. I have two users, one which has administrative rights and of course the root password.
I have lots of time to play with this, and any and all info is much appreciated ahead of time so I can study it.

Yes, I just added more ram to my computer with no problems in Pardus. I had two sticks installed with one extra stick in storage, and recently ordered a fourth stick so I could use the third stick. Anyway, it installed fine. I like Corsair brand. Funny thing is my dual boot windows xp only sees 3 G. and, like PhiX said, use the system>display manager. It retrieved the correct drivers for my card to implement 3-D support. Lisa Marie
