Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Re: X won't start after latest updates. [solved]

Thanks for taking the time to reply atolboo, but I'm a bit confused as to what you suggest.
My system information currently looks exactly the same as yours. I have xorg-video-nvidia-current 185.18.31 installed, but package manager wants me to install 185.18.36, which, if installed, doesn't let me start x. The existing version works fine, so I could just ignore the update, but that doesn't seem right somehow.
Are you suggesting that I write a bug report? I've never done one, but will have a go if appropriate.
Sorry for being so dim- and thanks again for your help!

Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Re: X won't start after latest updates. [solved]

Not sure whether to start a new thread- but I think this is the same problem:
Package manager is showing me three updates available:
module-nvidia-current
module-current-userspace
xorg-video-nvidia-current
(My graphics card is a Geforce 6200.)
Whichever way I try to install these, I end up not being able to start x, and having to use the history manager to rollback to the earlier state in failsafe mode.
I've tried the solutions above, I've tried using the nv driver then rebooting and installing the updates one at a time, but every time I get to the point where x won't start. Obviously I can just ignore the updates in the short term, but there's something not right! If appropriate I will write a bug report of course.
Thanks in advance!

Assistance / Pardus for beginners / Amarok sound quality
|

Has anyone else noticed that the sound quality in Amarok 2.2 isn't as good as in the KDE 3 version?
In fact the only way I can get good quality sound from mp3s is by using Mplayer (or Smplayer). Juk, Amarok, kaffeine, quodlibet etc. are all poor quality in comparison. They do work, but the quality is far less good.
I don't really understand about how these work- but does Mplayer use some different underlying technology to the others?
It's a shame, as I really like Amarok otherwise, with my music libraries displayed clearly.
Let me know if you need any more details.
Thanks in advance.

Assistance / Pardus for beginners / Re: New kernel- can't start x

All working here now. I had to refresh the package manager to get the new nvidia driver to show up, but having installed it, all is now happy with the new kernel.
Thanks for the quick responses and work by the developers.
Good luck Pjotr- I hope you get it sorted soon

Assistance / Pardus for beginners / [Solved] New kernel- can't start x
|
on: August 07, 2009, 11:11:52 AM
|
|
I've just installed two new kernels (I think) via the package manager:
kernel-2.6.30.4-125 and
kernel-2.6.30.4-125-pae
Both showed in the package manager as "upgradable packages" and both now show as entires in Grub.
However, using their entries in Grub, neither will boot to the desktop- they simply stop just before I would expect to see the splash screen.
The original kernel-2.6.30.1-123 still boots fine.
Is there something else I need to do to start x using the new kernels?
What is the difference between the two new kernels (what does -pae mean?)
Happy to provide more information, but I'm not sure what else would be useful. I'm running Pardus 2009.
Thanks in advance!

Assistance / Software / Re: Skype for 2009

Hi
I installed Skype this way a couple of days ago (onto Pardus 2009). All works well, except the webcam (Creative NX Pro) which doesn't. The webcam works fine with Kopete, and worked with Pardus 2008.1.
Quite a specific problem I know- but anyone any ideas?
Thanks!

Assistance / Installing Pardus / Re: Pardus 2009 Install Question

Hi All
Sorry if this is a silly question, but is it possible to upgrade to 2009 from 2008.2 by adding the 2009 repos and using the commands mentioned by atolboo above ? I realise that it's still beta, but I'd like to help out with testing, if it's possible.
I've had 2008 installed since it came out, but haven't got a spare partition, in case anyone wonders.
Otherwise I guess I should wait for the release, burn a cd, and reinstall, keeping my /home partition?
Many thanks!
