106  Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Re: StartX on: July 30, 2009, 09:24:37 AM
try this
Code:
service xdm status
if its running then then try adding nomodeset to your kernel boot line
if that works tweaking your xorg.conf may allow you to remove it again
if its not running then simply enable it to run on boot using service-manager in system settings

108  Assistance / Hardware / Re: Question about ati and fglrx on: July 29, 2009, 21:03:26 PM
its and xorg/ati/kernel problem not desktop or distribution problem.

if you are comfortable with compiling, git and know how to recover from an x hard crash then then you may try this if not you will have to wait like everyone else.

First off you need some extra packages.

Code:
autoconf xorg-server-devel kernel-source gcc make git

if X crashes and you do a hard reset you can append your kernel line with xorg=safe to reboot to a vesa display or xorg=off to boot to command line only.

next get latest mesa source

Code:
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/mesa/mesa

this  may take a little while

next select the radeon-rewrite branch

cd mesa then

Code:
git branch radeon-rewrite origin/radeon-rewrite
ensure is latest
Code:
git checkout radeon-rewrite
no we dont want to build the whole thing as we we can specify the models
Code:
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --with-dri-drivers=radeon,r200,r300
the r200 r300 are the only supported cards for dri but the group includes x1xxx series

once that is done just sudo make install any voila

if you do not have  much success or find the driver unstable you can reinstall mesa through pisi.

now add some info to xorg.conf

lspci | grep VGA will tell you the pci address of you card

so use you prefered editor for editing xorg.conf is use nano

Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

some option may lock your card it is trial and error

here is my device section

Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier      "ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200]"
        Driver          "ati"
        BusID           "PCI:1:05:0"
        Option          "AGPFastWrite"  "true"
        Option          "AccelMethod" "EXA"
        Option          "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
        Option     "DRI" "true"
        Option     "AGPMode" "4"
        Option     "EnablePageFlip" "on"
        Option     "ColorTiling" "on"
        #Option     "DynamicClocks" "on"

109  Assistance / Hardware / Re: Question about ati and fglrx on: July 29, 2009, 20:17:41 PM
Thats the open source version which is coming along nicely, if you get it from AMD site latest has support for newest xorg but not older cards the older one supports older cards but not latest xorg. This has been the case for a while, about the only distro left using the older x is debian.

With the open source one there are options to improve, performance. If you want more info post back, I wont post the link unless you ask for it and it is possible that it may cause issues with your system.
My fps in glxgears increased from <300 to >1300  Shocked on a x1150
110  Assistance / Pardus for beginners / Re: SU or root, I can't seem to become either to edit the GRUB menu ?!?! on: July 29, 2009, 09:05:28 AM
Did you give yourself administrator  rights  at install? needed to use sudo or  you can edit /etc/sudoers

correct syntax for  su -c "kwrite" -- but x will prevent this connecting

xdg-su kwrite -- x happy

xdg-su calls either kdesu or gksu depending on what is available and how its configured.
111  Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Re: 2009. I want to have KDE toolbar icons to launch applications... on: July 29, 2009, 06:01:35 AM
Weird, I wonder if it is theme/config dependent, as drag and drop does not work for me from lancelot or kickoff but does from classic. Right clicking works from kickoff only for me

Ok so I  just cleaned out my .kde .kde4 and .config/kde.org
and now dragging and dropping works from all three with the default settings
112  Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Re: 2009. I want to have KDE toolbar icons to launch applications... on: July 28, 2009, 22:36:26 PM
That works from the classic menu or kickoff menu , but not from lancelot.
You could always switch types to add them then switchback
113  General / As seen on the internet / Hope yet for older ATI card users on: July 27, 2009, 16:05:01 PM
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_ati_kms&num=1

I have tried and tested from a dailybuild iso

my ati xpress x1150 churning out >2000fps in glxgears running from a live cd!! Too early to bother attempting a hd install I like to use my system.

from my current pardus install <300fps

even with earlier fglrx drivers only ever hit  1000fps

Now I know glxgears is not a proper benchmark, but it is the first ubuntu release that has actually got to desktop from cd with no intervention.

As the title says hope yet Smiley
