Assistance / Download/Repos / Re: Pardus 2009.1 ( Beta ).

OK- impatient as ever I tried again. Everything went well, except that I can't start Pardus using the new kernel-2.6.31.9-129
When I select it through Grub, I get a blank screen
I can start Pardus using the older kernel-2.6.30.9-128, although I have to use the nv driver as X won't start using nvidia-current
Any ideas?
Thanks for all the hard work by the way, in getting the beta out and (almost) working really well!
What CPU & graphics card do you have? As I see this problem with my AMD/Nvidia box, but not on my VIA -based netbook (HP2133).

One thing you should do to see what's going on in the system is to run tail -f /var/log/syslog or tail -f /var/log/messages in a terminal window and then plug in the device(s). That way you'll see if there is anything at all happening. You should get several lines about what's been plugged in and any file systems on the device if everything is normal, as it's not you may either get some limited messages or an error or nothng at all.

Assistance / Software / Quick heads up on an OO Calc bug.
|
on: November 17, 2009, 21:46:54 PM

Just a quick heads up on a bug on OO Calc that I found in Kubuntu, and which is also present in Pardus 2009.
In a spreadsheet, if you select non-contiguous columns and then try to insert a chart, the correct number of data series are produced but they only contain dummy data.
Since this problem does not occur in Arch (which uses Sun sources) I've reported the bug upstream at Go-OO.

My impression was that the OO in Pardus was based on the Go-OO tree. Multimedia in Impress works with gstreamer rather than the abominable JMF which is one of the advantages of Go-OO over the "official" OO.org tree.

General / General topics / Occasional load problem with this site!
|
on: October 21, 2009, 17:26:08 PM
|
Every so often (maybe once a week or once a fortnight) apparently at random, when I go to my bookmark for this site it loads: http://www.pardus-linux.nl/ instead. The link to the forums on that page works, so it's not a big deal, just a puzzle why it happens. (I'm guessing that the two sites are on the same server and sometimes the DNS doesn't quite get it right).

Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Re: Odd boot message.

Thanks guys.
So I think the summary is that frequency-scaling isn't properly working at least in the stock kernel on VIA C7 processors.
Sometime when I've got time to let the machine do a kernel build I see if enabling the VIA C7 options helps. Is there any documentation on building kernel packages for Pardus (a search for kernel and build in the wiki didn't show anything useful)?

Hi atolboo: It comes up on the screen right at the start, before "INIT: 2.86 Booting", and is then repeated in /var/log/syslog shortly after the USB and Network subsystems are initialized. Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Odd boot message.
|
on: October 14, 2009, 22:34:47 PM
|
I'm running Pardus 2009 with kernel 2.6.30.8-127 on a HP2133 (VIA processor), and when ever I boot the machine I get the following message: Oct 14 10:21:46 ephiny kernel: [ 4.314207] longhaul: APIC detected. Longhaul is currently broken in this configuration.
Does anybody know: a) what it means and b) if there's anything can be done to get rid of it?

General / Wish list / kphone -- or similar SIP client
|
on: October 10, 2009, 01:51:21 AM
|
|
As far as I can see the only SIP client (as opposed to skype) in the repositories is twinkle in contrib-devel, and as far as I can make out that doesn't (yet) support video.
A full-featured SIP client would be a good thing to have. Since Pardus is a KDE distribution, I'd think that kphone would be the most suitable.
Does anyone else have any suggestions/alternatives? [I think that ekiga probably has too much Gnome dependency]

Assistance / Software / Re: arora: version mystery

An interesting postscript: It appears that the arora developers are working on Pardus -- I was checking the project page to see if a rendering issue I was seeing had already been reported, and noticed that the downloads were source, .pisi, .exe and .dmg (no debs or rpms).
