Assistance / Installing Pardus / Installer hangs - HP Mini 110 with SSD [SOLVED]
|
on: October 21, 2009, 00:34:57 AM
|
|
I have a new HP Mini 110 with a 16GB SSD in lieu of a hard drive. The installer hangs at:
*Populating /dev
I've done some digging and the problem does seem to be how Pardus tries to recognize/access the SSD. (The HP Mini 110 with a standard hard drive works for other people.) Ubuntu 8.04 with the HP Mi desktop is the preloaded OS and the SSD partitions are recognized as /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 (swap), /dev/sda3 (recovery).
I've had other distros not work (Zenwalk, Parted Magic) but Debris Linux (based on Ubuntu) had no problem. I was able to use gparted to create an additional partition (/dev/sda5) for Pardus.
Any suggestions?

Assistance / Pardus for beginners / Re: Partitioning - /home

Wait a minute! My /home is shared by VectorLinux, Pardus, and Ubuntu with no problems. It is VERY possible. What you will need to do is use a different user name for your account so that settings from Mint and Pardus don't mix. What you need is an entry in your /etc/fstab file that looks like this: /dev/sdb1 /home ext3 defaults, user 1 2 This assumes that your home partition is formatted ext3. If it's ext4 or xfs or jfs or reiserfs you'll substitute the appropriate filesystem. HTH, Cait

General / Wish list / fox-toolkit for Pardus 2009
|
on: September 10, 2009, 04:16:29 AM

See: http://bugs.pardus.org.tr/show_bug.cgi?id=10982I use Xfce rather than KDE and the screenshot plugin is very limited. I much prefer shutterbug, one of the sample apps that is included with the toolkit. There are other apps which are interesting which use the FOX toolkit that could be built eventually. I posted this maybe three weeks ago -- no response so far.

General / General topics / Re: How did you hear about Pardus?

I initially heard about Pardus on DistroWatch, long before I started writing for Ladislav. When 2009 came out I decided to download it, try it, and review it. (Yes, I wrote the review of 2009 for DWW.) Anyway, I'm still here which speaks volumes.

Except for the (now fixed) bug in pisi I've actually found Pardus 2009 to be very reliable and to have far fewer bugs than a typical Ubuntu release. It also is the first distro where everything (and I do mean everything) worked out of the virtual box on my netbook. I'm actually very pleased with this release.

if im in root mode, i cant access it.
I work with Pardus 2008.2 and have no problems to open kwrite in root-modus. You work with Pardus 2009 I think. Perhaps it can be a Bug in Pardus 2009 Greetings bubbel Hi, bubbel, It's not a bug. It's part of the security built into X. You can enable local root access to the default display with the command: xhost +local:root I put that in my .bash_profile so that it runs every time I login. That way I never have a problem accessing any X application as root using sudo or su. HTH, Cait

medit is now also in the contrib repository. If you do any development work it can handle syntax highlighting for a number of languages, including HTML and xml for the web developers out there. Anyway, it's one of my favorite graphical editors.

Pardus has some applications (base or contrib repositories) that you might find to be as good as or better than some of the ones you are looking for. wxcam was already mentioned. It does everything cheese does without the GNOME dependencies. I actually prefer vlc for my media player over audacious. Homebank is a good home finance package. I actually never heard of eqonomize before reading your post. Anyway, if you check these out you may like them and save yourself some work

Assistance / Software / Re: Systems locks during package upgrade, PiSi no longer functional

Unfortunately the script did not work for me. I get the following error after it runs for some time: nyssa phaedra # ./fix-zero-file-bug.py ./fix-zero-file-bug.py: line 6: syntax error near unexpected token `(' ./fix-zero-file-bug.py: line 6: `broken_packages = set()' pisi is still non-functional on my system. I'm not a python coder so I'm not likely to be able to debug this script myself I've already added this information to bugzilla.
