316  Assistance / Pardus for beginners / Re: Pardus not closing down properly and needing a hard switchoff on: November 27, 2011, 02:28:11 AM

[I'm not keen on changing the DE Anglo, I'm used to KDE.]

A live distro to usb would be as temporary as possible.

[No problems with the machine running cool - it's a monster in size too. And no I can't borrow another card - all my friends are computer illiterates unfortunately. Grin]

The salient factor is the temperature of the card { Addendum : or if the card is still seated properly}

[ Being retired I use the machine pretty well every day - morning, afternoon and evening. Plus I'm one of those users who believe in switching it off when not in use so it gets switched off three or four times a day..]

I was referring to type of usage, e.g transcoding video's ,ripping cd's ,  massive number crunching, playing online games , or simple email, that sort of thing.....

Some thoughts...........
Try using a different DE (Desktop Environment ) like LXDE , a live one preferably, they run lighter and have different operational demands.
Your video card was introduced in 2007, : so is it running cool ( fan working?) , or is it overclocked?
Can you borrow a newer video card ?
For that matter , is your computer running cool?

Edit : can you give us a general idea of your usage of the beast ?

How do I get into root mode? Is that the same as admin user? As the original installer, shouldn't I already be in root mode?

When you are running Krusader as a normal user, klick on the "Tools" menu of the toolbar, you will see : Start Root Mode Krusader ".
Klick on that, you will be asked for your "root " password.Once you give that , press enter , and you will be in root mode krusader.

+1 recurring.....

huh?

I don't think I have. Not on this machine anyway.

It might be a good move , if only to bring it up to standards. (Pardus IS a very modern Linux ) , but ,still lets see what Lisa has to say......

322  Assistance / Pardus for beginners / Re: Pardus not closing down properly and needing a hard switchoff on: November 22, 2011, 16:44:11 PM
Thanks atolboo. Can't think how I did that. Roll Eyes However I downloaded, burnt and installed the correct version. And all to no avail - I'm still getting the same shutdown problem. The 64bit is not appreciably better than the 32bit. And not exactly up to the minute with an ancient Firefox 5.0. Huh?

Hi Maurice
Could/can you tell us your Bios info ( manufacturer , the date issued , revision number ) ?
Just chasing thoughts here....

@ musiclover

You need a frontend to "RecordmyDesktop as well

http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/about.php

then read this

http://www.mehtanirav.com/2008/11/24/introduction-to-screencasting-in-linux-recordmydesktop/
 See if that helps.

This is going to take a bit longer that I thought. Huh?

I've downloaded the 64 bit version but, for some very odd reason, all my usb sticks, which vary from 1 to 16gb, are showing up on the screen as 1.1gb and all of them showing empty. I've never encountered anything like this before.

Betcha bippy if you examine the usb sticks with gparted you'll find that the 1.1 gig is a DOS  partion......linux doesn't much care what type  partiton  you use on the stick only the size matters......
