196  Pardus Anka / News & Announcements / Re: My vision of Anka on: May 31, 2012, 00:38:47 AM
And that is what Turbitak did very well. They create a linux distribution where everything was connected. Look at all the patches they made to archieve this. They even create own splashscreen to get this out-of-the-box feeling.

Tubitak spent a lot of time to connect all the software together, so they create patches that for example chatclient use clementine as musicplayer, etc. That is what make Pardus special, because it all works. And the new Anka is just compile and package software without looking at how they are connected together. Then you get just an ordinary distro. And what about Kaptan, Comar, PISI, etc? Who take care about these special Pardus products? Till now nobody in the Anka group.

199  Assistance / News & Announcements / Re: Pardus ... back to the future? on: May 30, 2012, 18:58:18 PM
Mmm .. still can not read it totaly (google translate still is not that good).

But things i notice and question i have are:
- Pardus Advisory Board decide the future of Pardus;
- Anka is developed under the leadership of Pardus Users Associaton
- in 2011 the final version of Pardus came??? (yeah, nice political answer)
- TUBUTAK will continue official version of Pardus (corporate edition?)
- The rest is more political blaah blaah ..

So what changed? Not really much, there comes not a real community edition, because it
is under supervise of the board (And in the board are Ahmet Kaplan and Sezai Yaniay).

But where i got most fear of is the way they want to change Pardus, it is the contrary of my vision
you can read here:

http://worldforum.pardus-linux.nl/index.php?topic=4371.msg24368;topicseen#msg24368

And a reaction on my vision from Gokmen Goksel on facebook:

Gokmen says:
We tried to create a distro which works out-of-the-box, yes. And we always stayed on this vision
so Pardus is here. If you take this feature out you will fail. If you decided to make something
completely different from Pardus itself you have to fork it, you shouldn't use its brand/logos etc.
of course you may say "it'based on Pardus".

And later on he says:
In English: If you don't keep features which make Pardus different from other distros you lost
Pardus's userbase like Richard said. If you are planing to make a distro to play with 3-5 people
as a hobby it's fine to ship multiple desktop in one CD/DVD. But if you are trying to make Pardus
alive you need to make it Pardus way or making it under another brand/name and show
that "it's powered by Pardus".

200  Pardus Anka / News & Announcements / My vision of Anka on: May 30, 2012, 10:54:53 AM
The last days i have been looking around in forums, read Pardus reviews, etc. And one of the points that came back every time is the reason why people love/use Pardus. It is/was a linux distribution that works out-of-the-box. With a very easy install GUI and software that is coupled to each other.

So 90% of the Pardus users expect the same from Anka. They are expecting a cd that they can install very easy with just one videoplayer, musicplayer, textwrite, etc.

And that is what Turbitak did very well. They create a linux distribution where everything was connected. Look at all the patches they made to archieve this. They even create own splashscreen to get this out-of-the-box feeling.

If i read about Anka right now, i see an other kind of vision. I read about one big DVD, Gnome, XFCE, E17 and even Wubi? So a lot of software that is not connected together as one out-of-the-box distribution. But ask yourself, is that what 90% of the Pardus wants or expects. I not think so. And what makes Anka then so special?

So my vision of Anka is to concentrate on what the Pardus users expects. They already expects KDE, and we now need to choose the other software, musicplayer, textwriter, etc. Then we need to release a x64 and x86 CD (maybe livecd inside of it).

And for the other 10% that wants somethng else (packagers and experts), they most of the time take care of themself. They build packages that we can place in the repositoy, and there will be allways a team that continious build packages for the repository.

But stay with what Pardus made specially. Otherwise Anka will be nothing more then all other distros on this planet.
201  Pardus Anka / News & Announcements / Communication and organization on: May 30, 2012, 08:57:33 AM
Form the facebook group by Dirce Yalçın:

Having an open community is good. People work voluntarily, not worshiping money. But, this shouldn't mean that we deserve to live in a chaos. I see an enormous co-ordination lack. Even among the Turks, some of which are real experts, some are half-experts, and some are not.
The most technical and therefore most valuable discussion (forum) I see is at "Ozgurlukicin.Org". Naturally, it is all in Turkish. But, even there, Turkish people are unaware of the latest developments and updates. Because, it is too confusing to follow up all the separate, individual comments.
1) For example, right at the very beginning, there was this big problem with Virtual Machine (VBox, etc.). See Hamit Giray Nart's ("kuftikufti") original announcement below (21 May):
http://www.ozgurlukicin.org/forum/haberler/24519/?page=1#post163661
2) After that, on 22 May, he made further useful explanations:
http://www.ozgurlukicin.org/forum/haberler/24519/?page=3#post163719
3) After that, on 25 May, he announced that VBox problem was mostly fixed and added to the ANKA test repo, except that vbox-guest packages had still bugs, so those who install the Virtualbox should add the guest packages from within the VBox menu instead of the vbox-packages for now):
http://www.ozgurlukicin.org/forum/haberler/24519/?page=8#post163826
4) HOWEVER, just a few hours ago (30 May), "Deligonul" made a comment, which shows s/he has missed the latest information from "kuftikufti". Deligonul says s/he sifted through all the forum comments right from the beginning, and yes, Deligonul did catch "kuftikufti"s explanations on page 3 but s/he missed "kuftikufti"s latest explanation on page 8:
http://www.ozgurlukicin.org/forum/haberler/24519/?page=14#post164032
There are many examples of such lack of coordination even in that very useful forum. It is a pity. Because, experts work and solve problems on one hand, but, on the other hand, these new developments and updates are not disseminated properly, from a central source, so many other people stay lost.
MY SUGGESTION:
1) At least 1-2 people from the ANKA team should be appointed to gather all the DAILY developments & updates and SUMMARIZE them in Turkish point by point, with necessary technical details but, in easy, basic Turkish so that even the ordinary users can follow through.
2) Then, this DAILY TURKISH SUMMARY OF DEVELOPMENTS, FIXES & UPDATES, should be "OFFICIALLY" announced at a CENTRAL forum, such as "Ozgurlukicin.Org" or some other suitable place, maybe here at "Pisi çiftliği" Facebook group.
3) Then, someone should TRANSLATE this summary into ENGLISH. I can do this job, maybe with some help (on technical terms) from a few other members (either Turkish or foreigner) of this group.
4) Then, this DAILY ENGLISH SUMMARY should be posted at the Worldforum.
5) All of the above should be done on a daily basis, every single day.

News that was placed on Facebook:

PARDUS RISING FROM ITS ASHES
http://yenisafak.com.tr/Bilisim/?i=385613
English summary translation of the article in the Turkish daily newspaper "Yeni Safak"
Reported by Melih Bayram Dede - Published 28 May 2012

-- Open source code Pardus operating system, which has gone through a short waiting period, is now being revived by the efforts of Pardus Users' Association's new version "Anka" --

Pardus had been developed by the Turkish state enterprise TUBITAK-BILGEM since 2003, but after the project manager Erkan Tekman's leave, its future had become unclear. Some claimed the project was discontinued, while after a working conference held on 23-24 March 2012 at TUBITAK Gebze campus, a roadmap was announced and it was emphasized that Pardus would continue. However, there was no sign of any further product development until very recently, when Pardus Users Association got involved and announced a new version "Pardus Anka" developed by the user communities' support.

NOW THE COMMUNITY HAS THE SAY

Mr. Nihad Karslı, who is an attorney and also the President of Pardus Users Association, says: "At the March conference, it was decided that further Pardus editions would be released by the user community. Until April-May, we waited for TUBITAK to make the official announcement. We elected our Community Delegate to the Consulting Board. However, TUBITAK delayed for reasons unknown to us. This delay caused rumors around the community that "Pardus is dead", "Project is over". So, we wanted to meet with TUBITAK people, and we thought we should have something ready in our hands, hence came out "Pardus 2012 Anka Test (Beta) Edition" (and, as I speak, our developers are working towards the final, stable version). We met with Pardus Project Manager Mr. Ahmet Kaplan and we had a larger meeting together with Mr. Mustafa Akgül and Mr. Abdullah Erol. I think it all went well.

June 2nd will be a historical turning point for Pardus

Mr. Karslı, continues: "Official progress on Pardus' development by the community has been delayed. June 2nd will be a historical turning point for Pardus. If the officials keep their promises they gave at the March conference, Pardus will become a free software project for real. The management will finally become transparent because decisions will be taken by the Consulting Board. This way, Pardus will become a permanent and also fast growing Linux distribution. Now we can get in touch with TUBITAK since the communication channels have been eased. Dialogue always fosters productivity. It is impossible to fall into serious dispute when the main concern of all the people involved is how to make Pardus better. Our priorities: First of all, the Kernel and KDE (GUI (graphical user interface), the desktop environment) have been updated to the most recent version. In this Anka edition, our developers are working so that any of the interfaces can be easily installed with their most up-to-date version. Another priority is to empower the "emerge" feature of PiSi (the "package manager" for Pardus) through graphics. This way, we will have addressed the complaints that PiSi is not sufficient and lacks enough packages.

Everybody should realize the value of this project

Mr. Karslı adds: "Pardus users should firstly and fully grasp the philosophy of free software. If we just simply calculate how great is the amount of local resources continuously transferred abroad due to closed source software, we can easily realize the value of the Pardus project. All the free software community has worked hard on Pardus. We should be informed about Pardus, spread the word, use it, and convince others to use it."

Our national operating system will be used in the intelligent boards

BILGEM Director Mr. Ahmet Kaplan states: "We all know the value of Pardus. We are going through a reorganization phase. The new Management Board will improve Pardus, it will be more democratic, more open and better documented."

WE ARE PLEASED WITH ANKA

Mr. Kaplan indicates: Anka is an initiative of the community. The initiative started as a response to the recent delays. We are actually pleased with Anka. However, its future will be determined by the Consulting Board. We will allocate a large amount of our resources to develop the ecosystem.

CORPORATE EDITION WILL BE RELEASED

Mr. Kaplan adds: "By the end of this year, we plan to release a long-term supported corporate edition. "Server", "intelligent" and "mobile" versions will be released in the coming years. Our first aim was to have Pardus in the intelligent classroom boards in the FATIH project. This version is ready. We are working on remote control and updating."

Why Ubuntu?

Mr. Kaplan says: "We plan to have various events to promote the Pardus brand and welcome contributions at all levels. For example, we will have Pardus clubs in universities. We will have competitions, contests. People will start asking themselves 'why am I using Ubuntu when there is Pardus out there already?'"

Posted in facebook group  Pisi çiftliği, by Dirse Yalçın:

1) FEEDBACK 1 (from "pardusovic"):
Konsole does not start?
SOLUTION 1(a) (from "maidis"):
When you update from Pardus 2011 repo to ANKA repo, some of the files are removed automatically. Because, both PiSi and KDE cause package partitions (divisions). Gwenwiev, Konsole and Kate are a few such examples. To load (repair) Konsole:
a) Start xterm (press Alt+F2 and type "xterm").
b) Type "sudo pisi it konsole".
SOLUTION 1(b) (from "pantera"):
Package Manager works already. You can set-up Konsole from the Package Manager, also.

2) FEEDBACK 2 (from "pardusedincik"):
... Deleting (removing) cups packages causes problems. Reverse dependencies? Why not add cups to safety-switch?...
SOLUTION 2(a) (from "pantera"):
Do NOT remove cups packages! We will work on "cups + safety switch".
SOLUTION 2(b) (from "kuftikufti"):
You cannot solve reverse dependencies via PiSi graphical interface. Use Konsole:
"sudo pisi rm name_of_package --ignore-dependency"
This way, you can get rid of dependencies and remove only the package you want.

3) FEEDBACK 3 (from "deligonul"):
Graphics files do not start?
SOLUTION 3 (from "pantera"):
Set-up Gwenview (picture viewer) from the Package Manager.
In the older KDE, all picture viewers were automatically loaded with the "kdegraphiks" package. But, they unnecessarily used-up (occupied) your system if you did not use them. Now, you can choose which one you want to set-up.
By the way, "xfce 4.10.0" is fully at the ANKA repo. So, other than Arch-Linux only ANKA has it now. You can test it also.

4) FEEDBACK 4 (from ".............."):

Instruction to test Anka, by Yoyo (http://parduslife.com/2012/05/21/pardus-2012-anka-el-trabajo-de-la-comunidad-pardusera-listo-para-probar)

- It is not advisable install in a production environment
- It is ideal in a virtual machine or in a separate partition on a new installation of Pardus 2011.2
- For now only available for 64-bit Pardus

NOTE: Before you start the whole process you must uninstall all three packages virtualbox that come installed by default in Pardus:

Code:
sudo pisi remove module-virtualbox-guest
Code:
sudo pisi remove module-virtualbox-guest-userspace
Code:
sudo pisi remove virtualbox-guest-utils

Once we are in Pardus 2011.2 first disable any repository, including the official:

Code:
sudo pisi dr pardus

Add the ANKA repository:

Code:
sudo pisi ar anka http://paketler.pardus-linux.org/pardus/2012/testing/x86_64/pisi-index.xml.xz

Refresh the list of packages:

Code:
sudo pisi ur

And proceed to the full system update:

Code:
sudo pisi up

207  Pardus Anka / Pardus Anka Project / What is FreePardus aka Anka on: May 26, 2012, 23:50:06 PM
Place on 13 april 2012 in the freepardus google group by Yasin Aydin:

As you might know, Pardus Linux is a national Turkish Linux distro, which is built from stratch. It started being developed by Tubitak (National Science and Technology Academy of Turkey), a government branch responsible for developing technologies for the country. Tubitak started developing Pardus with a codename Uludağ (short for Ulusal Dağıtım - National Distribution) primarily for governmental, military and educational usage.

Starting from last year, with some organizational changes in Tubitak, Pardus Project's development and management changed big time. Many developers of the distro left the project for various reasons. Then suddenly, Pardus announced end-of-line for the current release, 2011, without even starting developing or announcing the next release. These and more caused unstability and untrust in Pardus Project as well as Tubitak.

We, the people who love Pardus, who contributed Pardus somehow and want Pardus to continue "freer", are establishing this group to start a new Pardus, called FreePardus for now. Our goal is to have a distro based on Pardus, but making it free of any bureaucracy and completely make the community as the base, instead of governments and individuals.

Thank you for supporting our movement!

Remember: There is no "I" in community, except the letter "i".

Yes, konsole was not install standard (like a few other packages), but as you already find out,
you can install them with the package manager Smiley. Glad you got the Anka repo running, and i
have send your question about the server to the developers.
210  Assistance / Configuring Pardus / Re: virtualbox tools. on: May 25, 2012, 23:52:18 PM
Hi James,

- Install 2011.2 under virtualbox
- Add Anka repo and remove or turn of other repos
- remove module-virtualbox-guest, module-virtualbox-guest-userspace, virtualbox-guest-utils
- Upgrade
- Reboot into Anka

I think the virtualbox modules are not needed, but looks like you need to install again under virtualbox
