Hello folks, a colleague of mine asked me if I could install Linux on his friend's laptop. Her current laptop OS is a pirated Windows. She wanted to replace this with a legit OS at no cost, which bring us to Linux.  I have no problem with it, in fact I will even give away a free Pardus 2008 install CD as backup.

My concern is that, the laptop owner will be going to the US to work and she will take the laptop with her. Since Pardus's media players can play encrypted DVDs would this not bring her trouble in the US? What issues, if any, would she be concerned of as a regular Linux user (Pardus in particular) in the US? Is it really true that playing encrypted DVDs on Linux in the US is illegal?

Sorry to be a bother about this. But I am really inexperienced with command line

I got an error when I issued the commands. Here's a snapshot of my screen. Sorry for this full screen image.=)

1. I tried issuing the command verbatim... result error saying "unable to copy pdd file!"
2. I also tried the command replacing ip1000 with ip1500 because when I oppened tasma>peripherals>printer the option available is only ip1500 not ip1000 although the tar.gz package I downloaded and extacted is ip1000Linux.tar.gz.
3. Again I tried 1 and 2 above as root. same resulting error.
4. More suggestions?

No, I havent yet done those commands. I might have missed them in the previous link's guide. To be sure I will try them out when I get home. Whether this will make my printer work or not, I really appreciate your continued assistance.

I have another computer with Pardus 2008 (not used for printing or browsing yet.) I confirm that lsusb works after issuing the command su - with root password.

I will let you guys know how it goes later.

Thanks phix. I followed the instructions, after installing rpm2tgz and downloading the ip1000 linux driver from canon website. the process went without any errors and the printer ip1000 appeared as choice in the File>print menu of any document I opened.

However, the printer remained silent when I actually print something. No activity whatsoever. This despite the printer being detected during installation of the driver.

I have two questions related to this:

1.How do I remove the name of the printer canonip1000 at File>print? Its useless anyway so might as well remove it.
2. Back when I was still using Ubuntu, I can see what devices are being connected to my computer by typing the command lsusb. This command does not work in Pardus. Is there any equivalent to lsusb?

I appreciate the reminder. Ive read the Rules. As for installing pixma ip1000 canon drivers, the process as I see it are too complex for a newb like me. Guess Ive struck out on my old printer while on Linux.

Hello to all!

I am dual booting Pardus 2008 with WindowsXP Home Ed., but 99% of the time I'm logged on to Pardus. The remaining 1% of the time I boot to Windows happens when I need to print something on my Canon Pixma ip1000 which is not supported by Pardus. This isnt the fault of the distro of course.

Is there a way to make ip1000 work on Pardus?
