How do I switch from KDE to XFCE (in Pardus 2008)? I have installed all the files of the XFCE category in the package manager, including panel, desktop, etc., but I cannot find how to choose between KDE and XFCE sessions upon start-up. In other distros you can click on Session or hit F10, but I do not see that in Pardus.

Does this mean that the packages described in the wiki
(sudo pisi ar contrib-2007 http://paketler.pardus.org.tr/contrib-2007/pisi-index.xml.bz2)

still work with 2008? Thought this could give some probelems...

Hello Willem,

the user "william5" want to know how to choose between KDE and XFCE sessions upon start-up.

He had installed the XFCE-packages from the 2008 repo. Wink

I believe I do not have to do this sudo pisi etc., as I have already installed all the xfce4 packages from the 2008 package manager. I just go to the next line of the wiki. Please advise me if I am wrong here.

Hello william5,

you are not wrong here. I think the point "Configuration" in the Wiki is importantly for you. Wink

I followed the Wiki line by line and I now have XFCE working also. It is quite standard, not so slick as the Pardus KDE, but it has some advantages they say, so it's nice to have.

*Xfce: You can install it from Package Manager (at contrib repo, Xfce Desktop)

installation completed. to be able to use it, you need to do some configuration:

first, open ‘/etc/conf.d/xdm’ in an text editor with admin privilages (i prefer to use mc as admin). you should change ‘#DISPLAY_MANAGER=”xdm”‘ to ‘DISPLAY_MANAGER=”gdm”‘, and save of course
and then, open ‘/etc/env.d/45kde4paths’ file like we did before(as admin) and change ‘XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’ line to ‘#XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’.
finally you are ready to go, just restart you system and gdm will start. with this, you can select which graphical environment to use.

well i got xfce started like michiel explained it like you can see here:  http://worldforum.pardus-linux.nl/index.php?topic=2856.0

first, open ‘/etc/conf.d/xdm’ in an text editor with admin privilages (i prefer to use mc as admin). you should change
Code:
‘#DISPLAY_MANAGER=”xdm”‘ to ‘DISPLAY_MANAGER=”gdm”‘,
and save of course
this should make sure that xdm does not start but it did in my case so i added this step:

Code:
service kdebase stop

and then, open ‘/etc/env.d/45kde4paths’ file like we did before(as admin) and change ‘XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’ line
Code:
to ‘#XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’.

this makes just sure that no kde-app will apear in the xfce or gnome desktop...
