Potentially problematic ATI Radeon graphics and Broadcom Wireless got the correct drivers and configured OK. I set-up an additional partition for music & photos which I subsequently found I couldn’t write to because it was owned exclusively by root. But I changed permissions from the terminal and now OK. Very impressed!

Thanks Andreas. Yes, I gave myself super user privileges at install time but that didn't help. However, in the terminal I entered SU and responded with the root pwd. I then made 2 directories then did 'CHMOD 777 <dirname>' to set the permissions and started copying files with Konquerer. I'm no command line expert, I found the entry in Machtelt Garrels Introduction to Linux.
