can't send mails!

I have before been able to send mail through Kmail at the university library. But now Kmail says that it can't establish contact with the mailserver (mail.riseup.net). At first I thought it was the university network that refused the contact. But maybe it's my computer? I have tried

telnet localhost 25

and get the answer:

telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused

But, I don't know if telnet is the right command to use to test if the port is open at all. Any help will be appreciated!

Ok, now I have confirmed it with the IT- support. The network is blocking all SMTP- traffic. Is there a way around this? I don't know to much about ports, e- mail, pop, SMTP etc. 
Is there a way to use my K- mail and still send mails with the SMTP- ports blocked or am I doomed to always log in to my e- mail server when on university?

Thunderbird or any mail client will also use the mail transport protocol (SMTP) to send emails, so it won't be any better.
As I see it, yes, you are doomed
Unless you get in touch with the network administrator of your university and get special privileges from him...

Already  have. They say the ports to freedom will remain closed. Guess I'm doomed after all
