SciDaVis or similar for scientific plotting and analysis

Hi!
This is my first post and I am glad it took so long until I found a reason to post something

As given in the title I am looking for a origin/sigmaplot like software for plotting and curve fitting (my last piece missing for replacing proprietary completely). According to the webpage SciDaVis ( http://scidavis.sourceforge.net/ ) looks very promising! Sadly I did not find this or a similar powerful software in the repos. Does anyone have suggestions which recommendable software fulfilling my requirements is already found in the repos or could anyone provide a package for SciDaVis?

Hello and welcome beneedict,

Scidavis looks really nice and easy indeed. I downloaded and tried to run the binary, but it failed.
There is also gnuplot, that is available in Pardus repository. It isn't as easy to use, but it's really powerful.

These programs look great but I would also need a curve fitting feature (mainly mono- and biexponential decay), which I have not found, yet, having only a short glance at the feature lists.

Same here, also tried to run the binary but failed because it was requiring a python 2.4 library (Pardus 2008.1 comes obviously with 2.5). If I find the time, I will try to compile and pack it myself, but this might take a while since I do not have any clue of pisi packages (though I found the wiki instructions). We will see

As a last resource, you can run another distro virtually (VirtualBox etc) such as Fedora (.rpm) or Ubuntu (.deb) that SciDaVis is native on.

I know, R does almost everything, but does it also curve fitting? At least I could not find anything about this function and rkward

I have tested SciDAVis in Windows now and it is a really great Origin replacement. I like it a lot! A very easy (at least compared to Origin 7 which I have tried before) and  powerful tool.
I think it would be a great package to have. a first try to self-compile failed, but I did not go deeper any further.
R and RKward is also included in the testruns, we will see

PS.: By the way, not even Ubuntu has it in its repos!
