ICEsoft, the Canadian software company, has released ICEpdf, its Java library for rendering PDFs, as open source under the Mozilla Public Licence (MPL). The library can be used within a Java application to render PDF files on the desktop or within a web server as a headless PDF servlet with JSP (Java Server Pages) or JSF (Java Server Faces). ICEsoft say the library is useful, not only for viewing and navigating PDF documents, but also for converting and extracting PDF content.
As part of the open source process, ICEsoft have created icepdf.org, a community website which contains the downloadable ICEpdf sources, documentation, demos and forums.
ICEsoft is the developer of ICEfaces, a J2EE/Ajax framework for developing thin client and rich client applications. It is also known for its ICEbrowser HTML rendering component, which has recently, and quietly, been removed from sale and an end of life date of December 31st 2010 has been set for existing customers.
