Amarok sound quality

Has anyone else noticed that the sound quality in Amarok 2.2 isn't as good as in the KDE 3 version?

In fact the only way I can get good quality sound from mp3s is by using Mplayer (or Smplayer).  Juk, Amarok, kaffeine, quodlibet etc. are all poor quality in comparison.  They do work, but the quality is far less good.

I don't really understand about how these work- but does Mplayer use some different underlying technology to the others?

It's a shame, as I really like Amarok otherwise, with my music libraries displayed clearly.

Sort of solved this- by using atunes, which uses the mplayer backend.

Not as pretty, but the sound quality is far superior
