When I attempt to enable desktop effects I get the message:

"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.
Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type."

I'm using Pardus 2009 with all updates, an Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card, with the latest Nvidia driver 2.1.2 NVIDIA 185.18.36.  The CPU is AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+.  I would have thought that this setup would work?

I'd be very grateful for any ideas- I've probably overlooked something obvious.  I've tried changing various configuration options from the System Settings > Desktop > Desktop Effects settings, including the compositing type, and I've had a quick look at the xorg.conf, but there's nothing obvious to change there.  I've also Googled and tried a few solutions for different distros (which usually breaks Xorg!)

Thanks in advance.

Hey,
have you installed the driver with pisi or manual? You can use the current nvida driver form the depot.

Hi mdiegi

I installed the current driver package via pisi- it seems to be installed ok and works fine, except for the lack of desktop effects

Thanks

Thanks atolboo

I did look at those other threads before posting, but couldn't find any clues.  There's also a thread in the German forum on a similar matter.

To be honest, I probably wouldn't use the desktop effects, having played with them on other (live) distros, but it would be nice to get them working.

I tried the nouveau driver, despite there being no 3D effects.  I totally approve of it being open source, and would like to support it,  but my font rendering was terrible when I tried it, so I returned to the nvidia current driver.

Thanks again

I don't speak German, but I think these are about desktop effects?

This isn't about desktop effects but about the driver.
This one is about desktop effects.
Have a look in Bidschirmfoto 0,1 and 3
