I have only recently started using Pardus, and I had an icon at the bottom of the screen (kitty?) for adding and removing programs.  This has suddenly disappeared.  How can I get it back?

You can hit alt+F2 and type
Code:
package-manager

If you did a fresh install chances are that you have ran in to a bug that has been fixed, but causes problem until it is installed.

You could try the following command in a Konsole.
Code:
sudo pisi up

I also did a fresh install (again) and during first boot I selected Kitty to be in the panel. After the updates it had disappeared.
I fixed it by entering the Package Manager (the GUI of the application) and in the Settings menu first de-select the option of having the icon in the panel/systembar, followed by OK or Apply (I have a dutch system do not know the exact words), then select this option back again followed by apply and there the little pussycat was back in my panel.

I had an icon at the bottom of the screen (kitty?) for adding and removing programs.
This square space inside the panel is called System Tray.
This has suddenly disappeared.
This means that the Package Manger was closed in a non-regular way last time.
How can I get it back?
Get the kitty back by simply starting Package Manager from KDE Menu (in System).
And check whether there is a mark at  Package Manager > Settings > Configure Package Manager > General Settings > Enable system tray icon.
As you had the kitty before there should already be mark there.

If you did a fresh install chances are that you have ran in to a bug that has been fixed,
This bug can only be solved with the command shown [here].
