atolboo k3b can't erase the DVD-RW disks I have. It's not a problem with Pardus though it's a problem with k3b in every distro. Brasero on the other hand in every distro never has a problem erasing DVD-RW's.

The Problem with k3b is it can't really erase DVD-RW's it can only format them. I discovered though that xfburn for XFce can also erase DVD-RW's as well as Brasero but I still wouldn't mind having Brasero in Pardus Gnome.

I only have DVD+RW and the answer of K3b can de found in the picture below.
And I can simply overwrite this DVD+RW. No need to erase before.
So Brasero is not needed to handle this type of disk.
Erasing is only necessary with CD(RW).

Then I'll have to use xfburn to replace Brasero. I don't want to chuck my DVD-RW's for DVD+RW's when my DVD-RW's still have a lot of life in them.

And what happens when you use the Format button or Tools > Format/erase rewritable disk... in K3b?

k3b tries to format the DVD-RW because it can't really erase a DVD-RW and the formatting ends with an error message but Brasero and xfburn can erase a DVD-RW. You're right, k3b can just overwrite a DVD+RW but not a DVD-RW.

atolboo thanks for the link. I’ll talk to Sebastian Trueg about the problem. I bought a spindle of DVD+RW’s and k3b see’s them as CD-RW’s. I used k3b in Ubuntu to check them to see if the DVD’s were bad and k3b in Ubuntu see’s them as DVD+RW’s.

My computer is 9 years old now and maybe that’s part of the problem. Also, I did have Pardus check the CD before I installed Pardus 2009.1 to make sure I had a good burn and the CD checked out alright. Also, Abiword is doing strange things I’ve never seen it do before in other distros but I’m not going to post anything about that. As far as I’m concerned Pardus is much better then all the other distros I’ve tried and even with the problems I’ve had I still believe in Pardus completely.

This is strange and if this is true I expect the problem to be with Pardus and I would make a bug report at http://bugs.pardus.org.tr/
And mention that k3b in Ubuntu doesn't have this problem.
I think they will be very interested in this problem.

Ok, I can report is as a bug. It's funny though I'm having problems with Pardus 2009.1 because I didn't have problems with PCLOS 2009 but I had a lot of problems with PCLOS 2009.1. Computers are very strange things sometimes.

I did an update with the package manager a few days ago and now k3b sees the DVD+RW's as DVD+RW's. I don't remember everything in the update but one of them was a kernel update.

I think since Pardus 2010 won't be finished until 2011 I might install Pardus 2009 and see if I have the same problems with 2009.


UPDATE: I was just looking at the bug reports and it looks like people are having the same problems with 2009 as I've had with 2009.1 so I guess I'll just leave 2009.1 installed.

I too have had this problem with k3b, but in my case, it is with DVD+RW's. 
Under Settings>configure k3b>advanced I have ticked Automatically erase CD-RWs and DVD-RWs, but this does not make a difference.  The disks I use are Verbatim and Maxell dvd+rws and I've tried it with both of my dvd writers, an Asus and an LG LiteOn brand.  The disks in question contain a full video burned with the third-party Windows program, imgburn.  But it also happens with rws that contain a few data files burned using k3b.  The problem is that k3b will only append to a partial disk, and does not write over a full disk.   
After I choose Burn and when it is supposed to do this, it doesn't show a progress bar, and under the name of my writer (asus or liteon) it says, 'no info'.  Also, while it is supposed to be burning, a window pops up saying,

But, no problem as Pardus has XFCE desktop programs in repos. so I installed Xfburn and to see what outputs were given, I started it in terminal:

choose 4.3GB DVD
proceed to burn and select write speed of which I prefer 4 for this medium.  It does its thing, then says, 'Completed'.  It successfully writes over the disk. 

I am glad this problem arose, as I never would have tried anything from XFCE, and out of curiousity, I installed the XFCE desktop, and was happily surprised at how much it is like a much simpler design of Gnome.  So now I can select either KDE or XFCE session when I log in.  Neat!
So, my problem is solved because of the choices Pardus offers.

I am working on this subject .
At this moment I am writing a 4.2GB .iso file to the disk in the picture below.
As you can see Pardus-2011-Nightly-Live was on this disk.
Will be continued............


After this 4.2GB .iso file to the disk I can re-write another  2.9GB .iso file to this same disk.
All with K3b 2.0.0 and the cheapest DVD+RW from the local drugstore http://www.kruidvat.nl/
So as far as I am concerned there is nothing wrong with K3b.
