It's possible to use an iPod without iTunes but it has to be jailbroken first. One way to do that is with Rockbox http://www.rockbox.org/ You'll have to compile the program though. I don't know much else about it.

Rockbox is to be install on the Ipod not on the system, its an alternative OS for the Ipod.
As I don't have this hardware, I can't tell anything about this. Isn't Rockbox a software package to be able to make contact with Ipod and similar devices Is there any way I can help contribute?
Yes there is. After studying/reading Pardus developer base and/or Compiling Software and Packaging from the Wiki and/or Buch: "pisi --howtoYou can start creating your first actions.py and pspec.xml files. Examples of these files can be found at http://packages.pardus.org.tr/ (select one > Source Packages > select one > Build files) and pardususer.de build-files. And to build the package, only a simple sudo pisi bi pspec.xml -y is sufficient to create the package (or view the errors that are present/not solved). You're awesome!
NO, I am only with my toys.

Correct. Once you install that on your iPod, you no longer need iTunes to sync it. @Atolboo, Thanks for the info.

No its opensource firmware for ipod and simular, it enable connections by turning into a usb mass storage, nothing to install on computer
It's more than that. It's an awesome music player, better that what it replaces and since it's open source, it's compatible with all the music players. See here: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/WhyRockboxYou do need to install the Rockbox installer on Linux in order to install it on an iPod.
