I'm just wondering what Pardus is based off of, some Distros are based off of Ubuntu, some Gentoo and some Debian.... what is Pardus based on?  Huh?

I've looked high and low and I cant find the answer.

It's not based on anything. It's built purely from the ground up.

I know when Pardus first started out, it was based of Gentoo... so you're saying it's now purely an independent Linux distro?

Correct. It's totally independent now.  At first Pardus was based on Gentoo, though there isn't a whole lot of info on that.

I cant' say that package management is the ONLY reason they started from scratch but I can say that when they decided to make the new and better package manager, PiSi, they basically HAD to start from scratch as no other existing package management system is compatible.

http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/projects/pisi/PiSi.html explains why they chose to create PiSi.

http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/projects/pisi/index.html Main PiSi page.

So, if someone were to create a respin, it'd be considered Pardus-based. There is such a distro with LXDE, called bonobo, if I translated correctly. Sadly, not much info in English about that though.

Very interesting Craig, thanks a lot!

We need to spread the Word about Pardus in the English speaking Linux Forums and get the West more familiar with this Disto, it is by far the best one I've ever used.

Thanks for the help man, I appreciate it.

This is off topic, but.. I don't know if you're a hockey fan, but if you are, you are welcome to post on our Red Wings message board. http://fans.redwings.nhl.com/community/ We have a fun little community going over there, stop by if you like. My username is RedWingsRed.

We certainly need to spread the word about Pardus!

I'll check out your site but be forewarned, I'm a Floridian and know nothing about Hockey.

Here is a grapic map of Linux distributions:
http://images.linuxidx.com/go.php?q=linux+distribution+time+line

I can not see any connection with Pardus/Gentoo there.

If look at Wikipedia it says Pardus is used to be based of Gentoo:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pardus_%28operating_system%29

I dont know if that information are correct or not.

I don't know about Pardus really being based on Gentoo either. If you think about it, Pardus is almost always translated as either "gentoo" or "bug," when reading a Turkish translation. If it's a rumor, it could have been how it got started.

I can see a reporter looking at this and mistaking it.

It has gotten better though  Smiley  It used to be much worse.

It does look like it was never based on anything else, doesn't it?  Kiss

Back to this. It Appears that the Pardus Live CD 1.0 and 1.1 were based on Gentoo.

If you look at the first bottom three news updates at Distrowatch http://distrowatch.com/index.php?distribution=pardus ,you'll see that since the installable Pardus Linux 1.0 was released, there has been no further mention of Gentoo.

I guess the answer could then be yes and no. The first live CD's were based on Gentoo but the installable system has never been based on anything else. It was probably only a stop-gap until they could get their own live CD technology up and running.
