I'm probably missing something very simple but even though I have auctex installed, emacs wants to use the old built-in TeX/LaTeX mode for .tex files.

The only way I've been able to get AucTeX to be used systemwide is to go to /usr/share/emacs/23.2/site-lisp and manually add:
(load "auctex.el" nil t t)
(load "preview-latex.el" nil t t)
to site-start.el and remove site-start.elc.

Any better ideas?
