personally i'm a bit concerned about dropping bsd (and maybe solaris?).
the main reason is that i believe diversity, and thus ongoing research and development, is important, not only to the open source world. the i.t. world in general needs it too because there's more to computers than ease of use, gadgets and such.
chances are linux becomes the only and thus dominant os in the open source world, just like certain closed windows are in the closed source market.
i would rather encourage universities, research institutes, and governments(!) to keep developing a broad range of open source operating systems and applications. diversity pays off in the end (q.e.d.)
