I must say I am litte worried about it. I used XP/Vista when I tryed Linux (Ubuntu) for the first time.
If that option will be gone when Windows 8 arrives what future are it for Linux at the desktop then?

Most ordinary people buy there Pc.s with Windows pre-installed. And if it will be to difficult to install/try Linux not many would care to do it.
It be only thoose who already using Linux since before that will continue with it.

But will it attract any newcomers? I have my doubts..

easy enough: buy or build a computer(!) without a closed source os. 

compare it, just for arguments sake, to them apples: one can only buy one of those apples if one accepts their software and eula. mikrosovt can do, or maybe already does without its own brand, likewise.

personally i think mikrosovt will only succeed with computer brands who want to be solely sold with that specific os.

not every computer manufacturer will meet the demands of just one company, take a look at the server market: how many servers run a penguin?

there's also legislation in different parts of the world, like in the eu as you already pointed out.

so in the end, they maybe even have to launch their own hardware brand to make this work, just like them apples.
compare it to a car: like the looks of a brand but want to buy it with an engine from another brand; you can' t (therefore: buy only volvo's build till 1995  )

p.s. good thing to notify a consumers organization on this newest 'idea' from the redmond moloch.
