Hi all! What are thinking about Desura?
As I see, it is closed (like nvidia-drivers, for example),
but is it nessesary to have it?

It is a service, like steam, but for linux too.
you can download and play closed and open games and mods, using it.
Right now they have about 250-300 games in their list.

But it can break PiSi-system (or may be it can't?)

I not play so much games myself. But if look at the Pardus Pisi repo I find a lot of there to.
Like Alien arena and so on (fun game):

In general I try to use the applications that are already there, not just for games to avoid troubles.
You got som extra repos here:
http://worldforum.pardus-linux.nl/index.php?topic=3478.msg18496#msg18496

Many use PlayOnLinux for games (was in the Pardus repository for the 2009 version):

Thank you  Smiley
But the main feature of Desura is closed-source games, like
Oil-Rush. Of course, I can download and play Alien Arena, but
not Oil-Rush or Penumbra. (Let's call them "AAA" games).
So, the question - will it break PiSi system?

Thank you for this link, it is new for me.
I will ask Pardus' developers what are they
thining about Desura.

It is like "Steam" for windows, may be (?)
a new age, because Pardus has almost everything
except "AAA" games.
I am not so young, but my friends are still
not using Pardus waiting for games. "AAA"-class.
And they are ready.

It's just about that Desura was released publicly and free (as in beer) to download. And there is a plan to release it under GPL. But it's closed source right now.

Is there any license information about Desura client? Is it redistributable?

Is there any license information about Desura client? Is it redistributable?
Why this question
More info: Desura from pardususer.de is only the installer program.
The actual installation of Desura will take place in the form of a ~40MB download at the first start of the installer program.

I couldn't find any information about its license. If it's redistributable, maybe I can redistribute it too. Just legal issues Wink

And from an email to Alexey:
Quote
Hi Alexey,

We want the client to end up in the distributions of Linxux distros. So
you absolutely can package it up for your distribution. Just don't
change anything and include all the files. We will also be coming out
with an open source version in the months ahead.

And to Alexey for handling this issue.
