GIMP No paint dynamics available for use with this tool

Posting here first.  Maybe I am missing a dependency.
Problem is when I run GIMP and open an image (.png) and choose tools
I get
'GImp message
No paint dynamics available for use with this tool. Okay'

Much obliged. 
Last night I installed kolourpaint and mypaint and will be giving them a try.  It's nice to have more than one selection!
